Much as I can’t recommend Friday Night Lights to my friends, I’m beginning to appreciate its defiant stand against the crowd pleasing formula of the sports movie. It doesn’t glorify the game scenes, it spends too much time on character development, and the end was pretty anticlimactic.
I keep wondering how this movie was pitched to the studio execs:

I never really took Vin Diesel seriously as an actor. I’ve only liked two of his movies: The Iron Giant, and this one. All his other movies were for shit. Ok, so maybe Pitch Black was mildly entertaining; and Saving Private Ryan was good fluff, but not really Spielberg’s best work. Anyway, you get the idea.
That’s right, screw what the critics say. I actually enjoyed The Pacifier. Notice that the two Vin Diesel movies that I actually like are for kids. It’s either because the stars mysteriously align themselves when Vin Diesel is surrounded by kids and it triggers something that unleases the actor within; or maybe it just suits him when he’s not taking himself too seriously. I’m leaning towards the latter. I mean come on, with a name like that (his real name is Mark Vincent by the way); there has to be some entertainment value to watching him make a fool of himself right? That alone is enough reason for me to just sit back and enjoy the ride.
