CONfidence

ConfidenceI’ve actually seen this movie three times already. Twice last year, because my sister rented a DVD copy which we all watched (the fact that it was released in the Philippines two years after it was shown in the US just begs a more detailed investigation than what I have time for); and once again last night because nothing else was showing, and Rach and I didn’t want to go home just yet.

Comparisons to other heist films aside, CONfidence wasn’t actually half bad. Think of a downsized Ocean’s Eleven minus all the smugness that pervades every facet of the production. What you have is a less annoying story about a team of con artists in over their heads that is actually fun to watch.

Aside from the annoying tendency of the editor and the director to resort to quick cuts throughout the film, I find nothing wrong with this movie. And perhaps, that’s exactly why it’s probably destined to be one of those obscure films that nobody can remember. Like I said above, I sat through multiple screenings of this film, and even though I enjoyed each screening, I end up forgetting all about it after I leave the theater.

Aside from Paul Giamatti, and the presence of Dustin Hoffman, this movie is so unremarkable that it sits right smack in the area between “Good,” and “Great” where all forgettable films reside.
