He's both crucial and a pain. You don't get to choose when he appears or disappears, it's dependent on the level. Or on the game developer's whim. Oftentimes he appears when you really need him. There are a lot of levels which can't be solved with the Prince in normal mode and you needs the Black Ninja Skillz.

And sometimes he appears just because the programmers want to give you a much harder time. Because when you're in black ninja mode, his health drops continuously, so you have to find the next sand crate or a dead enemy which will restore your health.

You use the alter-ego much? I saw that dark-skinned dood and he has moves like I do (in TRL) so I'm hoping he's crucial to the game more than a pain.

[...] Faded Boxers wrote an interesting post today on PWiince of Persia : Rival SwordsHere’s a quick excerpt Like I mentioned in this post, this game took great pleasure in cockblocking me at every turn. At the start of this game, it deceived me into thinking that it was going to be a cakewalk because the first half of the game involves nothing more than you finding the next ledge to jump off from and maybe kill a few enemies who almost always have their backs turned away from you. Also from what I remember from the original PC version, you spend the majority of the game trying to figure out how to g [...]
