I first heard about SaveToby.com from Joedie’s blog and I was immediately intrigued by the idea.
Its beauty is in its simplicity: Guy rescues a rabbit, nurtures it back to health, and asks people for money—otherwise Toby will be served for dinner.
Now of course it’s obviously a joke, and should not be taken seriously; but that doesn’t mean that the idea is not without its merits. Organizations like PETA is proof that there are enough gullible and impressionable people in the world who’ll believe anything, especially when it comes to protecting animal rights. (For the record, I’m a staunch supporter of PETA Sucks.)
I think what’s missing from SaveToby as well as its imitators Save Bernd!, and Save Frisky is that they don’t provide enough motivation to make people want to send money to the site. They lack a sense of urgency to generate genuine sympathy for the pets; and they need to present a concrete example of the fate you have in store for your potential meal.
