Meh.
This was not a very interesting episode even if it did progress a mythology along. But before proceeding, I have to qualify that last statement. According to me, Smallville treats the Superman mythology in at least three ways:
- The Tease - This is when the show referrences something that will be considered canon in the Superman universe. They may not always shed what we know in a new light, but the mere mention of these are cool just the same. Examples are how Clark only wears clothes in Red, White, or Blue; how Clark once wrote for the school paper, etc.
- The Backstory - They may or may not reinvent the Superman mythology; but more often then not, these are given new twists or are reimagined for dramatic purposes. Examples include how Jor-El visited Earth when he was young where he prepared for Clark’s coming, or how Aquaman asked Clark if he wanted to form a Junior Lifeguard’s Association (Get it? JLA?)
- And last (at least until I can think of more), The Departure - This is when they totally screw around with the continuity of what we know about the story just for the heck of it. The thing that comes to mind here is how Lois Lane got to know Clark when he was still in high school, and she knows how he looks like without his glasses. This pretty much renders the purpose of Clark’s glasses moot.
Going back to the episode, while not a lot of interesting stuff happened in this episode, it did contain quite a few Teases:
- Lois getting to write a newspaper article for the first time. And of course, it wouldn’t be complete without mention of Lois’s poor spelling skills.
- Clark’s discovery of another power he has; his super breath
- And a new player who can make quite a significant reading in the Awesome scale (more on this later.
Anyway on with the recap. Apparently, Clark feels responsible (again) for almost causing the end of life as we know it, so he has been pushing himself by pulling all nighters secretly rebuilding the destruction caused by Zod.
Because he has been overexerting himself, Clark has come down with his own version of the sniffles.

One that can blast away his barn door…

And almost kill Lois who in turn gives us a thong shot.

Meanwhile, Lana moved in with Lex which pissess off Clark, but not much because he’s Superman.

While Clark is not being pissed by Lana and Lex moving in together, Lex gets himself kidnapped by an as yet unknown player so Lionel call on the Kents for help.

Clark’s cold has a habit of giving people hard ons because he can make girls’ skirts fly up.

And gives me more reason to love this show.

But unfortunately, Thong Girl turns out not to be that cute afterall, which is a perfect metaphor for what this show does for me. First it gets me all hard about Clark finally telling somebody about his powers, then he gives me a great big buzz kill by not pushing through with it. Well at least Chloe now knows everything, now if he’ll only realize that she’s a much better catch then Lana…

Clark uses is newly discovered Super Breath to save the world and stuff.

Now this is the new player to be named later I was talking about before.
First I thought he was going to be another annoying rich boy out to rule the world just like his boarding school buddy Lex. But when I found out his name and his aptitude with the bow, I soon realized that this was The Green Fucking Arrow!
And if the rumorville is to be believed, he’ll be sticking around for around seven episodes. And in that time he’ll contact and recruit previous guest stars Aquaman, The Flash, and Cyborg and form a mini-JLA. Can I get a HELL YEAH!?!
Before I go, I think it bears repeating that I think Chloe is the cutest girl on the show, and it bugs me to no end that she has no place in the whole Superman mythology. But that doesn’t stop me from rooting for her.
Oh, yeah, my point. Much as I love her, she’s got to do something about her arms:

Hell yeah!
