I have it. Rach probably bought me the book so I can finally stop whining about it.
So what did I think? Well, before anything else, I feel the need to post a few points about me that may qualify my assessment of the book:
- Artemis Fowl Ownz!!!!
- …
Hmmm, I guess that’s pretty much it.
You see it really doesn’t matter if the book does not measure up to expectations set by The Eternity Code (the best book by far if I remember correctly).
So what if the series is filled with caricatures instead of three dimensional characters? The fact that the closest to having well thought out characters in the whole series are the two main characters Artemis Fowl and Holly Short is of no consequence to me. They are more than enough to hold my attention for about three or four more books.
What confounds me is the fact that although I don’t usually go for halfbaked stories with plot devices in the place of characters, the Artemis Fowl books just work for me. I guess it’s because the character is so designed to hit the right buttons with the target audience (kids: me) that any other flaw that the books might have are forgiven by the kids (me). It doesn’t matter how lame or how contrived the plot turns out to be, as long as I get to see Artemis Fowl in action then it’s all good.
The downside to placing all your aces in one hole is that the attention of the reader (me) wavers whenever the chapter veers away from talking about Artemis even for a bit. Fortunately those chapters are few and far between so as not to come between Artemis and his fans (me).
